Characteristics of audio transformers
Audio step-up transformers (100V transformers) are connected to the outputs of audio amplifiers. They convert the amplifier voltages to higher levels (100V technology / ELA). Due to the lower current of the transformed signal (with the same power), audio signals can be transmitted over longer distances with lower copper loss or with smaller cable cross-sections to remote speakers. At the speaker, an Impedance Matching Transformer converts the signal back to a lower voltage and matches it to the speaker impedance (4 ohms, 8 ohms, or 16 ohms).
To transmit sound, noise, or music with the least possible distortion, toroidal audio transformers are advantageously used across the entire frequency range. If the design includes split windings, low leakage inductance can be achieved. Toroidal core transformers are designed for the required bandwidth. The usual secondary voltages are 50V, 70V, and 100V.
Since an audio transformer can provide galvanic separation between the windings (basic insulation), the risk of electric shock is reduced.
