Aircoils are inductors without ferromagnetic cores. The magnetic field around the winding closes over the air. This eliminates the often-problematic effect of nonlinearity. Only the relatively low permeability constant μ₀ = 0.4 * π * 10E-06 contributes to the inductance value because the relative permeability of air is μᵣ = 1.
The advantage is that the inductance remains almost constant regardless of frequency and current strength. Aircoils are characterized by high linearity.
Aircoils are used in industries and applications where high frequency, low loss, or avoiding core saturation is a critical factor. They prove useful in RF transmitters and receivers, audio equipment, electromedical equipment, and the field of smart devices and IoT (Internet of Things).
Regarding the design, aircoils made with enameled copper wire can be wound on many types of bobbins. An aircoil can also be wound with bonding wires. The bonding wire is wound on a polished winding tool and often bonded together during the winding process. Depending on the type of bonding enamel, bonding can be done with a solvent such as alcohol (IPA) or hot air. If the bonding layer above the base enamel is heat-sensitive, it is also possible to generate the heat required for bonding by current after winding, still in the winding tool. The current causes power loss in the ohmic coil resistance, heating and bonding the wire. In both cases, the air coil must be removed from the bonding tool (often the same as the winding tool). Many geometric shapes can be achieved this way, depending on the geometry and complexity of the winding tool. Approximate inductance formulas can be used to calculate aircoils. Single-layer or multi-layer round aircoils (ring coil or elongated cylindrical coil) are special forms of baked lacquer coils and can also be manufactured for SMT (Surface Mount Technology). Even high-frequency bonding lit wires (twisted small diameter self-bonding wires) can be used to reduce the skin effect at high frequencies.
